Death...

One moment he was there..the next he wasnt..

Friday,5:30 PM:work ends early for the day..What to do next..Will be bored to death in the room...

Friday,6:00 PM :I am on my way to Churchgate to watch a Sholay rerun after completing some important work in Mumbai Central Station...waiting for the train impatiently...And suddenly the train on the next platform screeches to a halt awkwardly..Awkwardly,bcos it's not a given that the train driver stops the train in such a way that the ladies compartment isn't at the exact spot that it should be...Precious seconds are lost in the jostle to the right compartment if the train stops in the wrong place and he could get lynched for that..

Anyways, the train screeches to a halt and a crowd starts to build up as the driver rushes out and starts yelling...Reason:A guy stepped too far out on the platform, slipped and fell under the train...If you thought this is was horrible...listen to this..

2 minutes later, the crowd is getting restive, some Railway policemen come over..shout instructions to the coolies..a stretcher arrives and the body is taken away unceremoniously to God-knows-where..All this in 5 minutes flat !!Pray why this sudden increase in efficiency??Ofcourse simple answer-there were people in the train and ofcourse it had to leave !!Wonder though if the dead man's relatives even got to know to this day...

In Mumbai there are 5000 ppl dying in train accidents every year...I guess, after a point, death loses relevance...Picture this,i actually heard somebody grumble that he would miss his Dadar connecting train bcos of the delay !! PEOPLE COME'ON !!!DEAD MAN HERE!!!

I have never seen death at such close quarters and although i saw the mangled body, there was no reaction in me..Shrinks would probably call it some pyschological disorder but I guess that's the way it is...I never give away my emotions..I guess deep down somewhere it's ingrained in me that expressing yourself would indicate a weakness...I dunno..thats my take,atleast..

And as far as Mumbai is concerned, after this incident:I hate Mumbai !! I hate it for it's lack of space, for it's "time is wealth" theme, for it's garish difference in wealth levels and most importantly for it's lack of sensitivity !!And bollocks to the people that say that it has soul,a presence,a trustworthy system !!

My most ardent wish-I hope I dont start to like Mumbai after living here for a coupla years..
